statement of intenet
My aim in this project is to successfully be able to show low light pictures, anywhere. With a little message that ‘where there is darkness there will always be light’. I will be exploring different methods and places in order to take these pictures to the right standard. By doing this I will be able to promote my interest in photography.
I am planning to do multiple shoot sessions, some with the help of my research. At the end of the shoot there will be a best and worst statement to show my understanding on what I did good and what I could’ve done better. I can reflect back onto this for the next shoot and make progress.
The photographers I will be researching are: Liam Wong, Bill Schwab and Imogen Cunningham. Although Schwab and Cunningham’s photography is partially based on black and white filters, I would still like to experiment and see what I can do with that. I admire the bright rays of light in Wong’s work. I look forward to attempting to do that myself too. My intention of making my work and their work correspond is to show that I was able to pick out specific pieces/patterns that I liked, and put it in my own work.
For locations I have in mind to go to: Town, China town, Salford Quays and low lit restaurants. Whereas in class I have the intention to do a few little things. However, I’m not fully convinced I can do a lot in class as my project revolves more around buildings, and at night. I will not be using any backdrops or studio lights as far as I’m aware as natural lighting will look better and I’m not taking pictures of objects or people.
There are a few different types of low light pictures you could take: low light in the city with colour or without, low light with objects and low light but of people. These are just a few examples. I personally think that low light in the city, colour or no colour is the best option for me. To expand my knowledge I will be researching different methods of how to use photoshop, and options as to what I can do to my pictures afterwards. By doing this I will have more of a variety to choose from. One risk I do have is the weather, as I can’t do much indoors my work will mainly be based outdoors so if it rains it’ll be harder to get outside.
I will be doing a shoot plan for each shoot this will explain and expand on what I will be using/needing. Of course, it’ll be a camera and perhaps a tripod. By doing multiple shots and shoots you will be able to see my progress of how well I have taken advice to improve my work. I also have my progress tracker that I can look back at to see what my teacher has given me to improve. For my final gallery I’m not too sure what I want the outcomes to be like. However, I do know that I will have my most successful and eye-catching pictures there. This is where my final theme will become clear to see. I would like to have a physical outcome, but as I’m not artsy it would just be a photo album. So, I’m not too sure on if I will be doing that.

Composition
Everything about this image is just simply breathtaking. The composition of this picture captures all of the surroundings, Wong does this by using a deep depth of field to include the background of the picture as well. This helps the person looking at the picture not only look at the highlighted areas but also the dimmer areas right at the back of the image and draws your eye onto the yellow spot in the centre. There are strong leading lines from the side of the pavements that create a vanishing point in the centre of the photo. We can also see upright lines of the doors and signs that help support the composition. I can see that Wong has used the rule of thirds as the man is in the bottom third of the picture, this helps him look smaller in his surroundings. He is also in the centre of the image with his blue umbrella reflecting the colour of the light above him. The scale of the picture makes the person looking at the image wonder what that one man is doing all alone in a city at that time of night or even what emotions he might be going through.
It seems to me that they might have used a fast shutter speed to capture this moment, the model may have been walking towards the camera man (Liam Wong) and so perhaps they used this technique to capture the right picture for them. Wong has shown the use of outdoor lighting so in a way this picture contains only natural lighting, although it is neon and bright colours. This means that there were no studio lights used to take this picture. However, The light reflecting off of the signs on either side and what appears to look like a shop on the right hand side of the image both make a drastic difference to the picture. Without the light of these signs and shops the picture would have no brightness in it. In my opinion, the single man in the centre looks distressed and disturbed, the lights give the effect that there is still a bit of hope left. I think Wong does this intentionally. On the other hand, the rest of the image is quite gloomy and ill-lit. This to me symbolises that the man is some sort of agony. The umbrella protecting/covering the man to me metaphorically is his shield from the pain. It's a double sided story in my eyes. This makes me feel sympathy for the lonely man.

comment
I'm quite fond of this picture of Wong's. I like the fact that the lighting is quite dim, dismissing the neon lighting on the sides. The lighting changes the mood of the picture, I quite like the effect that it gives off. I so see myself using lighting in this sense. My theme of low light goes well with this picture as it isn't too dark but it's not too bright.
connection
This picture makes me feel like I'm part of the scene, it also gives off the videogame like feel. The lighting in this picture is really bold. I believe it makes the picture 10x better. So, perhaps I'll be able to do that in my own work. To me it is something different, compared to anything I have done before.

Composition
I find that this picture is really peaceful and pleasant to look at as the lighting is very soft and the colours are pale greys. It seems like a really clean picture in the sense that there are no unwanted objects ruining the shot of the bridge. In this shot the main focus is the bridge and its lights, with the black lines of the telegraph poles adding interest. Because of the image being black and white this makes me wonder if this picture was taken with a film camera rather than a normal digital camera. However, it could be a digital image that has been enhanced using Photoshop filters. It also appears that the night is gloomy and dark, which is what the photographer has captured and enhanced. I can tell this because on Bill's website in this picture he states 'The Detroit Spirit is alive and well, but our poor city has certainly seen better days'. Schwab created this image whilst using the rule of thirds'. I can tell this because at the bottom you can see what looks like textured ground in the middle is the main focus, the bridge and at the top of the image is a clear yet dark sky.
The image has strong leading lines which are created by the strings of lights and the curve of the bridge that leads to a vanishing point in the middle of the left hand side of the image. This draws your eye to this spot, where we can see the outlines of some trees and an upright telegraph pole.
I feel that although there is no colour in this picture there's so much one can infer and you can let your imagination go wild and create your own story with what you see.

Comment
Personally, I do think I would use some of Schwab's techniques (lighting, angles and plain foreground) in my own work purely because I feel like it sets the atmosphere and give it a nice feel to it. I look forward to using some of his techniques in my own work and seeing the end product. On the other hand, I'm conscious that it might get too repetitive if I keep doing the same style of pictures meaning just black and white so I will have to find a way to blend the 2 together.
connection
Schwab's work connects to my work because I would like to do something dark similar his lighting skills. This fits in with my topic of 'low light'. As I said before about the picture looking clean and like a quiet photo, I hope to create such a picture like that too.

composition
When I look at this image, the different tones in this picture make it look quite unique and stylish. In this picture I really like how the front part of the picture is lighter than the back part of the image as it makes the white flower standout and draws your attention to it. The composition of this picture fits really well as it uses the rule of thirds, with the mossy soil in the bottom third and the leaves in the top two thirds. However, the flower is in the centre of the image which adds symmetry to the composition and gives the flower strength and importance.
In my opinion, I think the image looks really good in the black and white filter as it adds drama to what could be an ordinary subject matter. There are strong lines in the form of the flower that are then picked up in the outlines of the sharp leaves behind it.
I think the lighting is a studio light, it appears to me that the lighting is carefully positioned to light up the white flower from the front, creating strong shadows behind the plant. The picture might make one wonder if this picture has a meaning behind it or if the plant is in a special place of some sort. In my opinion this picture symbolises life, little ones going their own separate ways. People taking different pathways, opportunities.

Connection
I admire the use of low light in this picture. This connects to my work as I am also doing low light as a theme of not only colour but also in black & white. This also links to my work because I would like to do a back up theme of natural and man-made. Personally, I don't think that all of her work goes with my project but I will find a way to make it work. This connects to my work as It shows that there ca be two sides to what you see.
Comment
I do like the picture, however I feel that taking pictures of plants isn't very entertaining to look at. I do however like the look of the black and white filter on the image. I feel that if I also do this in some pictures it will bring out the texture and boldness of some parts of the picture. It is quite intriguing to look out. I like the idea of having colour and black and white as both tell 2 different stories. I feel that Cunningham's photography is actually quite good.

intention:
I will be taking pictures of the sunrises/sunsets. By doing this I will be capturing natural low light. After doing this I will be attempting to layer them either with each other or once I have more pictures. If this looks good and I am pleased with the outcomes I will be going ahead with something similar for my end product.

do i need models?
I may need models. However, I don't think I will be needing many because my project doesn't necessarily revolve around people specifically. Nor am I looking to take pictures of people.
how many photos do i need to take?
I'm not too sure on how many pictures I need to take but I will need enough to have for back up in case some don't work out.
Why am I taking these pictures?
I am taking these pictures purely to show a little message that 'where there is darkness there is a ray of light shining through places you can't see.
how does it link to my research, moodboards and 4 c's?
This project links to my mood board because I have said how and where I am going to go for my pictures and how I am going to get those shots. For example, what props I am going to use to get a specific picture.
first breath
intention:
I will be going out to town as there is and event celebrating new life. I will be going out at night to get low light/ dark pictures. This relates to my project based off of the darkness. The low light will help me to emphasize the light beam in the center. By doing this I should be able to achieve high quality low light pictures.
b.t.s:
This picture is my best because the lighting is the right darkness and it embraces the single beam of light shining.
|
This picture is my worst because you can see other people's heads at the bottom and I also feel that the lighting is right.
|
Light upon light:
best:This picture is my best because although isn't in fine focus it still looks good as the rays are sprouting out.
|
worst:This picture is my worst because it isn't positioned properly at the bottom left of the picture you can see the cranes. If I crop it' the picture won't look as good it'll be too cropped.
|
what's that?:
best:This picture is my best because the way it captures the light as well as the buildings makes it look like an anomaly compared to the other pictures.
|
worst:This picture is my worst because although like the other it captures something other than the light, it isn't how I imagined it to be. It also isn't focused well enough.

evaluation
What was the project theme and what did you think of it?
My main theme was different and I explored the different types such as natural light vs man made light.
I thought the theme was good because I was able to take images of objects that I liked. For example, sunsets and sunrises. This fir well with the low light theme.
Although I did not like the theme, I can see that I was able to photograph different objects. I prefer being able to photograph sunsets.
Did it allow you to be creative? It did as it allowed me to experiment with different pictures and colours.
Did you improve your knowledge and skills? I learn about other photographers and I got to study their work. I gained new skills on photoshop and what they do. For example, what changing the opacity can do.

2. What part of the project did you enjoy the most/found most interesting (taking photograph? Photoshop? etc.)
In photography I found the use of Photoshop the most interesting because I enjoyed manipulating my work and improving the image
Did you prefer taking photos? I preferred taking pictures over the writing as it allowed me to achieve my outcome.
Did you enjoy setting up location shoots? I enjoyed going to places like town as I had a wider variety to choose what I want to take pictures of. This allowed me to expand my photoshop skills as it gave me more options to edit and 'manipulate' the pictures.
Did you enjoy going to Town and taking action low light images? I did enjoy it because it meant that I could get ahead of my work and it allowed me to expand on my ideas as to what outcomes I want to have.
For my camera in the majority of my pictures I used a phone camera. However, I had to adjust the lighting to highlight the low light areas.

3. What new techniques have you experienced?
I have learnt how to Photoshop to my fullest ability. For example, I have learnt how to layer images and edit them.
How did you find it? I found this quite interesting as it has helped my mind to a new side of creativity. This has helped me expand my knowledge on what else I can do to switch up my pictures.
What was hard? I found it quite difficult to remember each step on how to achieve each step.
How did you improve this skill? I improved on this by repeating the steps so that I could somewhat memorize the steps.
What tutorials did you use? I haven't used any tutorials I just used my skills from what I have learnt and I had researched about Idris Khan, I went based off of his pictures.
What specific tools/filters? I used the cropping tool to edit the image sizing.
Camera techniques? As I had used my phone for the majority I didn't need use any manual camera techniques.

4. What technique would you like to develop further?
I would like to develop my skills more in Photoshop. For example, I would like to be able to add filters on my work. I might do this on the end product pictures if I have time.
How to do studio shoots similar to the ones you did with the
professional photographer? The pictures I got this time were taken in a dark room with a dark background. However, we did still use a studio light, this was to highlight key areas. To adjust the outcome to the low light category we kept the ISO quite low so that it wouldn't be too bright.

5. Which photographers did you research through this
project?
The 3 photographers I researched:
- Imogen Cunningham
- Angus McBean
- Liam Wong
I researched these 3 photographers as all 3 link to the category of 'low light'. Learnning about these photographers helped me understand what I would like my outcomes to look like. This linked to my work as I would like to make my work have some parts of their work. I also researched about Idris Khan, his work is what my work is based off.
Did you just copy their work or did you make it your own and
personal? I made it my own work whilst adding touches of their work. That way it's not fully theirs but I have still included them in my work.

6. How have they influenced your photographs?
To link my work to Idris Khan's work I used the same effect of layering and making the buildings spread out each time. To do this I just layered the images and nudged to the sides a little each time. At the end I would decide if Iwant to make it black or white or if I wanted to keep it in colour. This helped me achieve the Idris Khan effect.
7. Which technique did you enjoy the most?
I really enjoyed trying out something new on photoshop because it allowed me to express my creativity. In my opinion, the best tool I've used is the crop tool because without using that I wouldn't have the outcomes I received. also because in my opinion it gave me a good outcome, grew confidence and want to experiment with more pictures.
8. What do you feel is the most successful part of your project
and why?
I learnt how to use different ways and effects on photoshop to help me create a professional looking portfolio of work.
A particular shoot, for me my best shoot was the light upon light event. I really do feel confident with them pictures as they're something I wouldn't have been able to create myself nor in a studio.
Final outcomes, I feel that I will stick to doing the Idris Khan effect as I have some skills that will help me to achieve the right outcomes.
A particular technique you used, personally, I don't feel I sued anything in particular. It doesn't seem like much but I feel that putting the lighting down when taking pictures on my phone helped me a lot because if I didn't do that the pictures would have looked too bright.

9. Did you encounter any problems in your
project?
Did you find anything difficult during this project? I think I just found what I want my photoshopped images to look like and what I want the final outcome to be. I found this difficult because I wanted it to be something completely different to my past projects.
10. How did you learn and how did that affect your
final images?
I think I have used the techniques I learnt though watching video
tutorials. Although, in the end I didn't actually use a tutorial for my actual project I just went based of what I had already learnt.
Learnt form using the camera on manual, I learnt how to adjust the ISO to get a darker setting
Learnt exploring Photoshop/Photopea, I've learnt how to adjust photos to your preferred size and how to crop out things you would like to add to another image or would like to delete
Learnt from research, I have learnt about how other photographers have created their work and what inspired them.
Mention the journey you have gone on, I went on a journey of not knowing what I actually want to do. In the end I have managed to decide what I want my final outcome to be.

11. What would you do differently given the chance to
complete the project again?
Bringing in props, I wouldn't be able to bring in props as I am more revolving my project more around buildings.
Time management, I had to manage my time by making it a priority to go at night so I would have enough pictures and ideas to photoshop
Independent at home, all I could do at home was finish off writing as I need it to be later at night or for it to be dark to take actual pictures.
Online learning? I was able to do my research about the 3 photographers at home. This gave me more time to do my photoshop in class.
Being independent, I had to go at night to pictures for this project. To me this shows great independence,
Organizing my own shoots away from school, I would go to town as there is backstreets, events and chin town where I could go pictures that helped me.
